I arrived in the colored pencil world via the back door, having planned a career in industrial art - but never quite getting there. Over the years, I experimented with various media: oils, acrylics, inks, and jewelry. Finally, after retiring from San Francisco to Boulder, and casting about for a moveable hobby, I took up colored pencils. Ten books, an Elderhostel Workshop in Sedona, and a couple of local workshops later, I created a studio in my garage and started to see where colored pencils would take me.
When I discovered Mylar and then Dr. Martin's Radiant Transparent inks, I abandoned more traditional subjects and techniques as too tedious and time-consuming for arthritic hands and an aging back. I've spent the last three years experimenting almost entirely with abstracts and abstract versions of recognizable subject matter.
Everybody laughs when they see me moving and talking in overdrive, but I believe I am in a race against time while I still have the energy, eyesight and coordination to enjoy my art adventures and be productive.
